Leftie for a Day

As a right-handed person, sometimes I do wonder how the other half lives. Recently, I discovered that I am indeed able to write mostly legibly with my left hand, although the scribble is rather reminiscent of a six-year-old’s. Today, I am going through life as a leftie. At least mostly.

The first thing I realize is that I consciously have to remind myself not to things the usual way. Brushing hair out of my face or unbuttoning my pants, for example. Then I find that my fine motorskills are rather lacking: I spill yoghurt on the kitchen floor, forget to wash parts of my face and cannot for the life of me figure out how to dry between my toes. Now that the morning has passed without major incident and I can finally get back to the computer, where the mouse remains on the right side of the keyboard for expedience’s sake, my fingers begin to stumble across letters while I type. It feels as if I should be doing something differently, even though this is one activity that is normally completed using both hands. Is that caused by my brain trying to cope with all the left-handedness? Or is it merely further evidence that I really am a space cadet today?

Let’s see how the day progresses from here…
