If the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in the 80s turned out to be US Representative Charlie Wilson’s war, this film is Tom Hanks’ movie. Hanks plays the scheming jack-of-all-trades who, together with a radical CIA agent and a rich sponsor (Julia Roberts), almost single-handedly decides the fate of the Afghan people by persuading the government to invest increasingly gigantic sums of money in support of the rebels. This is an excellent, fascinating movie on many levels, with a fabulous cast. I won’t say more about it. See it yourself.
